EARL POWERS

GARY DECIDED IN THE FIELD THAT HE WANTED TO BE A MEDIC. HE WENT BACK TO THE REAR FOR TRAINING AND CAME BACK TO OUR PLATOON AS OUR MEDIC. I KNEW HIM BEFORE AND AFTER THIS. HE WAS A VERY GOOD FRIEND. HE DIED AFTER I LEFT

I was a medic in the same platoon as Gary. He suggested that one of us go out on patrol and the other stay back. I remember going over to him after the booby trap went off. That was on Good Friday 1970. I always think of him and the rest of the company in the spring.

I do not believe that he ever got a combat medic badge. I did place one by his name on the Wall in June 1999.

Julie Fuller, daughter of Linda Polk

I have heard so many stories of my Uncle, Gary Polk. That he was a wonderful man. About how he joined up in the heat of the war because he wanted to serve his country. I gave several speeches in college as did my sister and even my son. I feel like we missed out on knowing a great soul but at the same time I am proud of his bravery, his willingness to serve our wonderful country... Wish I would have gotten to know ya Uncle Gary! I see the pain of loss everytime my mom talks about her little brother who she loved so much. What a wonderful website to honor this brave group of men.

Gary was my best friend in JR High and Senior High School. I have many stories I can tell you concerning Gary one being when we flipped end over end once and rolled three times in his daddy's work truck. I got a scratch on my hand (which I call my God loves me scar) George another person in the truck had a minor head injury and Gary did not have a scratch on him until he was climbing out of the truck on its side. When he stuck his head up to crawl out the door came down and hit his head, almost knocking him out. He was OK.God was certainly with us as teenagers that night. I remember my dad coming to the scene of the accident and arguing with the policeman that that ole truck wouldn't do 90 mph. Well Gary got a ticket anyway. Lots of more stories, if you like you may contact me by email and I can call you to discuss your uncle with you. I truly loved him as a brother. My email is miketheriverking@gmail.com.
PS I knew his brother Richard but it was mostly just through Gary.
