I remember Dave, he was in my unit and I was with him the day it happened. I must say that it is not a found memory. Joe Middendorf

David was my brother. I was 16 when he was killed. I feel for all those who survived the physical hell they experienced while fighting the war; my heart goes out to you for the mental anguish you may still be experiencing. From day one my parents said, "David was a part of our lives; we will talk about him". This outlook I believe has helped me relate in a good way to others who have had to deal with the lose of someone dear so in the long run something positive did come from the experience.

This is very hard for me to write...but I feel I must. My dad was Vincent Rogalski and he served with David. My father passed away in 2006 from cancers caused by AO exposure. Before he died, he told me a story about Mr. Bukowski. My father suffered terribly after the war with PTSD. About 14 years ago, Dad was inpatient at Coatesville VA hospital after a suicide attempt. My father had lots of guilt surrounding the war. My father and I went to The Wall to visit David after one of his therapists recommended he talk about this incident. It was only Dad and I and he told me that he was supposed to go on the mission that killed David and he had just gotten out of the bush and David said he would go in Dad's place because Dad had just gotten back. When David went on that mission, he was killed. My father felt the heavy weight of survivor's guilt his whole life because of that....I am sorry that I don't have a lot details, but that is all he told me and then we went and sat under a tree and cried and talked for a while. My Dad felt responsible that this young man died and carried it with him his whole life. He said he was good friends with David and not only did he loose his friend....it was his fault. I am so sorry that David is gone...I am sorry from my Dad too! I think my Dad would have wanted his family and friends to know how selfless and heroic David was during the war...and he saved my Dad's life. I wouldn't be here if he hadn't taken Dad's place. There is probably a good chance my father would have died. So, thank you Mr. Bukowski for your heroic actions. I hope you and Dad are up in heaven sharing a beer!
