Service Description
I arrived in Vietnam in April of 1970 and was assigned to C company 3/21 infantry. After a week in Chu Lai, I was flown out to LZ Center. My MOS was 11C, but with only a squad of of morters on the LZ, I went to the field as a grunt to wait for an opening. That wait lasted about 6 months. The first mission I was on was supporting Marine engineers and ARVN rangers clearing brush along the beach close to Tam Ky. Most of my time after that was spent on patrol in the Heip Duc valley. I was wounded once with shrapnel from a 60 mm morter in my face and back, but after a week in Chu Lai, i was back at it.
I left Vietnam in March of 1971, thanks to a 30 day drop courtesy of Richard Nixon.
